====== Session Ending Checklist ====== When a session ends, the players stop having direct control over their characters, but due to the concept of [[players:philosophyofplay#onetoonetime|1-to-1 Time]] the characters continue to take action between the end of one session and the beginning of the next one. This is called "downtime." Presented here is an end-of-session checklist which sets up the characters for fruitful downtime actions. ===== Checklist Items ===== * **Determine the character's place of lodging and means of sustenance during downtime.** This may include: * An inn within a civilized(?) settlement (this is relatively safe) * An outdoors encampment and personal supply of rations and water (this comes with some significant danger, but death is by no means assured) * A dungeon encampment and personal supply of rations and water (death is almost certain unless extreme care is taken to fortify the character's position) * **Ensure that character sheet information is completely up to date.** Examples include: * Be sure that the character sheet correctly lists the character's current amount of Hit Points / Wounds. * Be sure the character sheet correctly lists the character's current amount of consumable items such as hurled ranged weapons, range weapon missiles, torches, lantern oil, etc. * Be sure the character sheet correctly lists the currently memorized spells. * **Declare intended downtime actions.** Examples include (note that this list is not exhaustive): * Traveling from one location to another along generally safe and patrolled routes * Leading or taking part in large-scale battles * Gathering information * Gathering common spell components from the nearby wilderness((Should the character(s) wish to do this in a dangerous place, it could precipitate a combat to be resolved at the outset of the next session.)) * Performing work-for-hire or self-employment in some kind of odd job * Crafting items, researching spells, and the like * Training to level up, learn a secondary skill, learn a language, etc. * Seeking, interviewing, and potentially hiring henchmen or hirelings * Thieving, cat-burglaring, con-artistry, and other overt or potential criminal actions((Note that this may result in the character being arrested during downtime.))
